A panel discussion with film screening of Mencari Kartika (Searching for Kartika)

Syariah Law Implementation in a Multicultural Society

Date: Tuesday, 10 August 2010
Time: 4:00 pm – 5:30 pm
Venue: Seminar Room II, Institute of Southeast Asian Studies, 30 Heng Mui Keng Terrace, Singapore 119614

First time filmmaker Norhayati Kaprawi was inspired to make Mencari Kartika after surveys by polling house Merdeka Center found a large majority of Muslims in Malaysia supported the caning of Kartika Sari Dewi Shukarno for consuming alcohol. This documentary explores the Muslim’s perception of ‘justice’ in the context of Malaysia that is lauded for its modern progressive, multi-racial image. In fact, Kartika herself has endorsed the film, saying that it offers viewers a larger truth about her actions and statements after she was sentenced. The screenings in Kuala Lumpur were met with enthusiasm by the media and public.
