Page 2 of 2 We emerged from the session with a keen knowledge on the challenges facing advocacy in civil society within Singapore. Having recently studied civil society in university, the session brought the theories of Sandel and Barber to life, giving us an element of realism to what we had previously only read about in books and discussed in class. The session also convinced us that although the civil society sphere in Singapore remains nebulous, the processes of negotiation, conflict as well as consensus no doubt characterize it.
The main message of the day was: Passion, passion, and more passion. Constance and her contemporaries are the living example that the fight to end gender discrimination will only survive the test of time if they are accompanied by unrelenting passion. Members of Youth @AWARE emerged from the session very inspired and equipped with better knowledge on the workings of advocacy in civil society in Singapore. - Nurhaizatul Jamil |
