25 Nov - AWARE's 21st Anniversary Party Print E-mail

It was a night of revelry and wild partying at the Q Bar on the night of 25 November 2006, as we celebrated AWARE’s 21st birthday. It was a milestone in several ways as the 21st year is often associated with one’s coming of age. We had another reason to celebrate as it also marked the successful completion of the White Ribbon Campaign which saw many months of arduous hard work by the Male Chapter, volunteers and secretariat. Coinciding with the event that took place throughout the whole afternoon outside Orchard Cineleisure, the evening saw the transformation of many of our volunteers, hitherto perspiring in their casual wear of T-shirts and jeans to glamorous evening wear, of black with a touch of red.

Our guests were bowled over by the delectable bite-sized appetizers of smoked salmon, cherry tomatoes and salami, which were prettily arranged on the trays served by the ever-obliging waiters. With its never-ending stream of supply, many of our guests surely had too many mouthfuls.

The programme lined up for the evening was a highly entertaining one as jazz diva Alernay Fernandez charmed the crowd with her rich vocals and renditions of songs. However, it was dim sum dolly Pam Oei who brought the house down with her riotous antics, incisive wit, and spot-on imitations of a whole variety of accents and her affectionate jibes at social issues of the day. Belting out a couple of songs with her unmistakably powerful and soulful voice, the crowd clearly went wild.

There was also a fashion show that evening, as models sashayed down in a kaleidoscope of colours, in outfits painstakingly created by upcoming local designer Kavita Thulasidas. Three of the models were no more than our very own long-serving members, Tan Joo Hymn, Braema Mathi and Lena Lim, who proved to be extremely sporting in parading down the aisle, all looking very stunning and relishing the moment.

It was heartening to have everyone come together that night, to see how our past presidents and members let their guard down- as Zaibun took to the floor with her semi-aerobics dance, as Dana had one too many a cocktail to drink and to see Joo Hymn with some other women, usurp the platform. That evening, we celebrated all of AWARE’s past achievements, her growth and 21 years of accomplishments and having been a significant voice inSingapore’s social and political landscape in being a voice for women.

AWARE thanks all guests who supported the event and took time out to celebrate the evening with us. We also thank all the volunteers whose time and commitment to the event ensured the success of the celebrations.

A big thank you also to all our performers, Alemay Fernandez, John Molina, Pam Oie, Vanessa Fernandez and Aresha.
