17 Mar - Women’s Outdoor Challenge 2007 Print E-mail

Saturday, the 17th of March saw over 1000 people thronging East Coast Park to take part in the first ever Women’s Outdoor Challenge (WOC). The inaugural sports event, held in conjunction with International Women’s Day, was aimed at promoting women’s fitness and outdoor sports, and funds raised, which amounted to over $30 000, will benefit AWARE’s counseling, educational and youth programmes.

WOC offered something for everyone, from 5km or 8km individual runs, to the exhilarating team games Ultimate Frisbee and Combat Laser. The run took participants on a scenic route by the seaside, stretching eastwards. Ultimate Frisbee, a non-contact team sport played with a Frisbee, saw teams scoring points by receiving a teammate's pass in the "end zone", a marked area at either end of the field. Combat Laser, a painless outdoor combat simulation game using infra-red technology, had players running around, dodging opponent’s fire, shooting them down, achieving team objectives and missions.

In the run up to the event day, AWARE organized a series of talks by experts, entitled “Fun, Fit and Fabulous”, which tackled female fitness myths, and issues from eating right, to extreme sports and financial advice.

Corinna Lim, WOC’s chairperson, extended her appreciation to all participants- “Thank you all for your support and participation in the Women’s Outdoor Challenge. We hope you had a blast on Saturday [the 17th of March] and enjoyed the event as much as we did organizing it for you.”

The event was sponsored and supported by the following organizations:-
