YOUTH @ AWARE AND THE WORLD BANK PRESENTS ‘THE NEXT GENERATION: A GENDER LENS’

On 8 December 2006, Youth @ AWARE and the World Bank organised a youth forum titled ‘THE NEXT GENERATION: A GENDER LENS’ to engage Singaporean youths who are concerned about the issues affecting their peers and themselves. The forum was held at the AWARE Center and was well attended by youths from selected organizations such as NYAA, NYC, UNIFEM, SCWO, Youth @ AWARE, and World Bank.

The discussions on the 5 different transitions of a youth – Education, Employment, Health, Family & Citizenship, adapted from the World Development Report, were based on the café concept. Each cafe represented each transition and participants were free to move about the cafes to discuss the issues. The role of gender in the society we live in and how it evolves during the 5 youth transitions was also looked into. Many interesting issues were brought up.

Under the transition 'health', issues such as aids awareness and the situation on aids in Singapore was part of the discussion. The issue on how can HIV positive or aids patients be integrated into the society was one topic of interest.

The depth of many of the discussions that took place in other cafes is really quite impressive.

This is a continuous effort by Youth @ AWARE and the World Bank to engage youths from all walks of life in dialogue. This forum follows from the World Bank Youth platform during the IMF meeting in September 2006.
