The Befrienders initiative was started in 2004 and has proven to be crucial in helping women in violent and abusive relationships seek the necessary protection for themselves.

Phone calls to the AWARE Helpline indicated that only a small number of women chose to pursue a Personal Protection Order or PPO for themselves. Some women did not know that they had a right to protection by court intervention.
 
Befrienders are trained volunteers who offer help, support and information to women in violent and abusive relationships. They discuss the practical and legal options available and accompany women to the police station or hospital as well as walk them through the legal system.

In case you need someone to accompany you as you attempt to seek help for yourself, please call the AWARE Helpline at 1800 774 5935. The Helpline works from 3 pm to 9.30 pm on all working days.

To volunteer as a Befriender, you must be at least 23 years of age. You must also be able to work flexible hours, as your assistance may be required during the day.
