Milestones in our struggle against violence

One of the achievements over the 20 years AWARE is most proud of, is our 10-year advocacy campaign that culminated in Parliament making amendments to the Women’s Charter in 1996

The road towards amendment to the Women’s Charter:

1986 

  • Establishment of the SCWO Task Force for the Prevention of Violence, chaired by Singapore Council of Women’s Organisations (SCWO) and AWARE

1987

  • SCWO Task Force and National Crime Prevention Council (NCPC) hold public forum followed by a year-long public education program

1988

  • Public of handbook “Men, Women and Violence” by SAWL (Singapore Association of Women Lawyers) and AWARE

1990

  • Launch of Rape Awareness Week, sponsored by AWARE, SAWL, SCWO and The New Paper
  • A Series of Workshops for Professional Caregivers organized by SCWO Task Force
  • Seminar on Domestic Violence organized by SCWO Task Force, NUSS Department of Work and Psychology, and SCSS (Singapore Council of Social Services)
  • Publication of Dr. Colleen Ward’s Book “Victims of Sexual Violence”

1991

  • AWARE holds public forum on Violence
  • Registration of Society Against Family Violence (SAFV)
  • SAFV/SCWO/AWARE Seminar “Networking for Families in Crisis: The Management of Rape and Domestic Violence”

1992

  • SCWO Rape Study group (comprising AWARE, SAWL, SAFV and Samaritans of Singapore) submits “A proposal for Standardising and Enhancing Police Procedures in Rape Management” to the police
  • AWARE/SCWO public forum on “Sexual Harassment: The Legal and Political Implications”
  • AWARE marks International Day to end Violence Against Women with a five-day exhibition and play “Victims No More” at National Library and Geylang East Library
  • AWARE launches a 2-year survey on Sexual Harassment

1993

  • Study Group begins dialogue with Police
  • AWARE program on International Day to end Violence against Women

1994

  • Forum on Family and Violence organized by the Singapore NGO Committee for the Beijing Conference
  • Rape Study Group expanded to cover other forms of violence.  Renamed Women and Family Violence Study Group
  • AWARE marks International Day to end Violence Against Women with public forum: “She Asked for This? Violence Against Women”

1995

  • AWARE hosts a drama presentation and dialogue on theme of Violence at Queenstown Branch Library
  • AWARE/Body Shop launch campaign against family violence and conduct public survey to monitor attitudes towards domestic violence to support the Soin Bill on Violence Against Women.
  • AWARE/BAHAI Office for the Advancement of Women jointly mark International Day to end Violence Against Women
  • NMP Kanwaljit Soin moves a private member’s bill on Violence Against Women. The bill was defeated

1996

  • Government reviews Women’s Charter and includes some of the provisions of the Soin Bill with regard to more protection to victims of domestic violence.
