Wearing a White Ribbon is a personal pledge never to commit, condone nor remain silent about violence against women.

First commemorated in Singapore in 2003, under the TWC2 (The Working Committee 2), it focused on violence against foreign domestic workers.  In 2004, AWARE (Association of Women for Action and Research) took over the challenge of  the WRC, with the focus on Sexual Violence.

AWARE, in 2005, set up it's Male Chapter, and they organised the WRC Campaign with the focus on Family Violence.

The 2005 edition of the White Ribbon Campaign (WRC) was commemorated in Singapore on 25th November 2005 at the Toa Payoh Bus Interchange. Every year, the WRC is commemorated on 25th November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.

With the theme in 2005 being Family Violence, it was apt that the event was held in the heartlands. Ribbons and leaflets were distributed in the vicinity from 10am onwards, by volunteers from Singapore Soka Association and Christian Outreach Centre. 70,000 brochures and ribbons were also distributed to households in the neighbouring estates.

A mini exhibition was also put up by Holy Innocents' High School. Booths were set up by Singapore Children's Society and Association of Women for Action and Research (AWARE).

In addition, students from Serangoon Garden Secondary School started on their graffiti art piece on "children as silent witnesses".

The event kicked off officially at 12 noon with the arrival of the Guest of Honour, Mr Zainudin Nordin, Member of Parliament for Bishan-Toa Payoh Group Representation Constituency (GRC). Speeches were made by Ms Braema Mathi, AWARE President, Mr Lee Sze Yong, Co-Chair of AWARE's Male Chapter, and Mr Zainudin Nordin, the Guest of
Honour.

After that, students from Serangoon Garden Secondary School performed a short skit on violence against women, and a song performance.

Following that, a rap and a breakdance group from the Singapore Children's Society presented a performance on child abuse.

Then, a short skit by AWARE's Male Chapter highligted the issues of the cycle of violence

To close the event, Mr Zainudin Nordin, the Guest of Honour, was invited to sign on the WRC pledge, a pledge never to commit, condone nor remain silent about violence against women.
