From the launch of the long awaited AWARE book, to campaigns, forums on a broad range of topics and issues, and fundraisers, 2006 and 2007 saw many exciting events and campaigns organsized by AWARE. AWARE organised the Women's Outdoor Challenge on 17th of March and saw over 1000 people thronging East Coast Park to take part in the first ever Women’s Outdoor Challenge (WOC). The inaugural sports event, held in conjunction with International Women’s Day, was aimed at promoting women’s fitness and outdoor sports. AWARE also launched "Small Steps, Giant Leaps: A History of AWARE and the Women's Movement in Singapore" on the same day. The Book Launch and the Women’s Outdoor Challenge were part of AWARE’s activities to celebrate International Women’s Day. Click here to view 2007 events. In 2006, AWARE hosted Dr Michael Kaufman, the founder of The White Ribbon Campaign. AWARE, with Dr Kaufman, held a series of workshops and talks for the public, teachers and students in February 2006. It saw the participation and support of various schools and organisations, including the National Youth Achievement Council, Canadian High Commission and MCYS. August 2006 saw the most successful charity premiere that AWARE has ever organized, when we held the charity gala screening of the Singapore-made film, “Singapore Dreaming”. Mrs Yu-Foo Yee Shoon, Minister of State for Community Development, Youth and Sports was the Guest of Honour for the event. AWARE worked with Singapore Dreaming and the support of donors of the “Keep Singapore Dreaming Programme” to give out 2000 free tickets to deserving groups such as nurses and social workers, and also, the underprivileged. AWARE also organized forums through 2006. One, entitled "Sex Slaves: Children Forced into Prostitution", was held at the Singapore Council of Women's Organisations (SCWO), shared the findings of the research on the Legal instruments to curb sexual exploitation of children outside of Singapore. Another, entitled : “Sex In The City: Protect You And Your Family” was organized in partnership with Action For Aids, at the Singapore Post Pavillion, and aimed at creating awareness of the rise in Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs), especially in teenaged girls and married women, encouraging safer sex, understanding the psyche of why couples stray and teaching women to protect themselves. November saw the fourth year of the White Ribbon Campaign in Singapore, when each year from 25 November to 6 December, a white ribbon is worn to make public a personal pledge never to commit, condone nor remain silent about violence against women. The theme for WRC Singapore 2006 is “Real Men Don’t Hurt!” and we hoped to convey the message that men need not resort to violence to gain power and control. We had an exciting and eventful road show event outside Orchard Cineleisure on 25 November, attended by our Guest of Honour, Mayor Zainudin Nordin from Central CDC.
